Castle Rising Castle

We love, love, LOVE visiting history! It was another day trip with Jon ... this time to Castle Rising Castle (not to be confused with Castle Rising villiage). This castle is about 5 miles from Kings Lynn in Norfolk county.

The keep at Castle Rising was built by William d'Albini II around 1140 to celebrate his marriage to the widow of King Henry I. It was the largest in the country when it was built.

The earthbanks and ditches are man-made and covers 12 acres. A wonderful place to rolly-polly or slide down! ;) The most famous person to have lived here was Isabella, Queen of Edward II, who was an accomplice in her husband's murder (for shame!).

The day we went was overcast (as you can see) and we arrived there within 15 minutes of opening. It was awesome, because we had the castle to ourselves, so-to-speak. Right as we were leaving, 2 school buses drove up and we promptly bid adieu to the castle!

PS - vote on whether you like or dislike the orange swords I MEAN audio guides! ;)
